On Oct. 19, 1961 the Knoxville Knights took on the Charlotte Checkers in the season opener and went on to a 3-2 victory. The game was played at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium and Coliseum, now the home of The Knoxville Ice Bears, Ice Shows, and the new amateur adult Smoky Mountain League.  The Ice Chalet opened in 1962 and was the first rink offering public skating, hockey, and competitive ice skating.  Knoxville Amateur Hockey Association (KAHA) was formed the same year to serve the youth and adult hockey players in East Tennessee.  The following year, Holiday On Ice star Robert Unger moved to Knoxville and established the Robert Unger School of Ice Skating.  The Ice Chalet also hosts the Greater Smoky Mountain Curling Club (GSMCC). In 2002 an additional rink, The Icearium, opened in west Knoxville.  The name was changed in 2007 to Cool Sports when they added a 40,000 square foot addition which houses an indoor soccer field and basketball court. Cool Sports now hosts KAHA and the Knoxville Figure Skating Club (KFSC). Pro Vision recently opened its doors to provide on-ice training, as well as off-ice conditioning.
